As your audience grows, “everyone” stops being a useful group. The people who already bought from you need different messages than the people who just signed up. Tags and segments let you sort your audience so you can reach the right people with the right thing. Think of a tag as a sticky label you put on a customer. A segment is simply a group of people who share something — a tag, or how far along they are with you.

The groups Crevio creates for you

Crevio automatically sorts everyone in your audience into one of three groups, and keeps them up to date as people take action:
GroupWho they are
LeadsPeople who gave you their email (through a form or a free sign-up) but haven’t created an account or bought anything yet.
FreePeople who signed up but haven’t made a paid purchase.
PayingPeople who have bought at least one paid product.
These update on their own. When a lead signs up they become free, and when a free member makes their first paid purchase they become paying. You never have to move people around by hand.

Your own tags

On top of the automatic groups, you can create your own tags for anything that matters to you — the product someone bought, a giveaway they entered, an interest they have, or where they came from.

Open Customers

In your dashboard, go to Customers.
2

Add a tag to someone

Open a customer and add one or more tags. Type a new tag name to create it, or pick an existing one.
3

Tag people automatically

Set up a form to tag everyone who signs up through it — so your audience stays organized without any extra work.
Ask Crevio to help. Try “tag everyone who bought my photography course as ‘photo students’” and it can group them for you.
Tag names are unique. If you create a tag with a name that already exists, Crevio reuses the existing one instead of making a duplicate.

Use groups to target your emails and ads

This is where tags and segments pay off. Instead of sending everything to everyone, you can speak to exactly the right group:
  • Email — Send a thank-you offer to only your paying customers, or a welcome nudge to your leads. Learn more in Email your audience.
  • Ads — Build an ad audience from a group of customers to reach more people like them. Learn more in Run ads.
  • Phone calls — Follow up with a specific group, like leads from a recent giveaway. See AI phone calls.
The more thoughtfully you tag people, the more personal your messages can be — and personal messages get far better results.

If something goes wrong

The automatic groups (lead, free, paying) update based on what people do, so they correct themselves over time. If a paying customer still shows as free, check that their purchase completed successfully.
Tags are matched by name, so “VIP” and “vip” may look similar but count as different tags. Keep your naming consistent to avoid confusion.
Check the form’s settings to confirm the tag is selected. Tags only apply to people who sign up after you add the tag to the form.
