# Abandoned checkout emails

> Email buyers who started a checkout but didn't pay, with a link straight back to their items

When someone starts buying from you, enters their email, and then leaves without paying, Crevio can send them one reminder email with a button back to their checkout. Orders that come from that email are marked **Recovered**, so you can see what the reminder earned you.

The feature is **off by default**. These emails go to people who haven't bought from you yet, so you decide whether to send them.

## Turn it on

**1. Open your checkout settings**

Go to **Settings** > **Advanced** and find the **Checkout Configuration** section. It appears once your payments are connected.

**2. Switch on Abandoned checkout emails**

Turn on **Abandoned checkout emails**.

**3. Choose when it sends**

Under **Send after**, pick how long to wait after the buyer started the checkout. The default is 4 hours. You can choose anything from 1 hour to 72 hours.

Turning the setting on or off, or changing the delay, does not interrupt buyers who are checking out at that moment.

## Who gets the email

Crevio only emails a buyer it has an email address for:

* a buyer who typed their email into your checkout page before leaving,
* a buyer who was signed in while checking out,
* a buyer whose checkout was created with their email, for example by your website or an integration through the API.

A checkout where the buyer never entered an email gets no reminder, because there is no one to send it to.

## When no email is sent

Crevio skips the reminder when:

* the buyer finished paying, or Stripe already took the payment,
* the buyer's card was declined or the payment was blocked as risky (one-time purchases),
* everything in the checkout was free,
* one of the products can no longer be bought,
* your payments aren't set up to take money right now,
* the buyer is you or another admin of your business testing the checkout,
* the buyer bought anything from you in the last 14 days,
* the buyer started a newer checkout with you since, in which case only the newest one can get a reminder,
* the buyer already got a reminder for the same products in the last 72 hours,
* the buyer unsubscribed from your emails, or earlier emails to them bounced or were marked as spam.

Each checkout gets at most one reminder, ever.

## What the buyer sees

The email comes from your business name and replies go to your support email. It lists the products and quantities from their checkout and has a **Complete your purchase** button.

The button opens a new checkout with the same products and their email already filled in. It always uses today's prices. A discount code they had applied isn't carried over, so they need to enter it again.

If the buyer has already paid for that checkout, the button shows their order instead.

Every reminder has an **Unsubscribe** link. A buyer who unsubscribes gets no more reminders from you, and is also removed from your email broadcasts. They still receive receipts for anything they buy.

## See recovered sales

Orders paid through a reminder carry a **Recovered** badge next to their status in **Orders**.

## Limits

* **One reminder per checkout.** There is no sequence of follow-ups. This is by design.
* **The wording is fixed.** You can't edit the email's text or design.
* **No discount in the email.** The reminder doesn't include a discount code. Add one to a [checkout link](/docs/features/checkout.md#checkout-links) if you want to offer one.
* **Late sends are dropped.** If the reminder can't go out within 6 hours of its scheduled time, it is skipped rather than sent late.
* **No list of abandoned checkouts.** You can see recovered orders, but not the checkouts that were left behind.
